Introduction Several studies have shown that valosin-containing protein (VCP)/p97 is associated with anti-apoptotic function and tumor metastasis via activation of the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway. Initial studies indicated that the expression of VCP in oral cavity and oropharyngeal carcinomas has prognostic significance. In addition, VCP inhibitors were investigated in initial experimental studies on squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus.
