The article presents some historical information about the origin and development of the doctrine of clothing in general and military clothing in particular. The data on the conduct of research on the hygienic properties of clothing and shoes by domestic military hygienists are presented. The role of F. G. Krotkov in the development of scientifically based requirements for military uniforms, the relevance of which remains to the present time, is emphasized.
