To the Editor, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), widely known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a debilitating neurological disorder that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord that control volitional muscular movement.[1] Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT) is an artificial intelligence Chatbot developed by Open AI, a California-based firm. It is well known for providing accurate, concise, and simple information about a certain topic of interest.[2] The goal of publishing this viewpoint is to better comprehend the suitability of using ChatGPT in counseling patients with ALS, as well as its future implications. Table 1 depicts a dialog with ChatGPT about ALS with eight questions. ChatGPT provides a realistic-sounding explanation in simple and concise fashion.[2] It employs basic language to describe difficulty swallowing and speaking, which is easy for patients to understand, to explain symptoms of ALS such as dysphagia and dysarthria.[3] ChatGPT can provide patients with prescription-related information such as dose instructions, potential adverse effects, and drug interactions. For example, while looking for Riluzole details [Table 1], it provides correct information regarding the drug's pharmacology.[4] While looking for treatment, it covered all of the possibilities accessible up to this point. The disadvantage is that it does not explain what is clinically relevant and what is not. The Revised ALS Functional Rating Scale score (ALS Rating Scale), for example, has several limitations when measuring disease progression. In terms of ALS management, it states that it is tailored to the needs of the patient but does not explain how.[5]Table 1: Questions raised and responses generated by Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis? In my opinion, AI has the capacity to help nonnative speakers overcome language barriers. It can serve as a replacement tool for the Google. It can translate languages for the patient's convenience. It requires more training based on the existing new recommendations, and treatment should be individualized to the patient rather than being given a holistic approach. The disadvantage is that there is no personal connection or emotion tied to it, which I believe is crucial when announcing a serious diagnosis such as ALS. In the near future, I believe technology will serve as an auxiliary to, rather than a replacement for, health professionals. Future research might concentrate on developing techniques to overcome these constrains when maximizing the benefits of ChatGPT in the health care and medical sectors.
