This model coordinates surgical planning for hearing rehabilitation and reconstructive options in patients with microtia, highlighting multidisciplinary care.
Microtia, often accompanied by aural atresia, presents complex reconstructive and audiological challenges that requires a multidisciplinary approach. We describe our service model used in our ear reconstruction centre in Edinburgh, with an emphasis on modern techniques for hearing rehabilitation and external ear reconstruction. We employ a hub-and-spoke model, and management includes early diagnosis, auditory rehabilitation, and a range of reconstructive options. We recommend coordinating surgical planning for hearing implants and ear reconstruction to minimise complications.
