Addressing the challenge of preserving geometric features in 3D power equipment models using existing simplification algorithms, this paper proposes an improved algorithm based on the Quadric Error Metrics (QEM) algorithm. This improved algorithm optimizes the cost of edge collapse by introducing approximate curvature and volume error factors for edges. Experiments conducted on a 3D transformer model demonstrate that, compared to the standard QEM algorithm, the enhanced method reduces the maximum error by at least 15.88% and the average error by at least 21.82%. Furthermore, the improved algorithm effectively retains important geometric features of the model, thereby enhancing the display effect after model simplification.
