With the increasing use of distributed new energy grid connection and nonlinear loads in the power system, the problem of harmonic interference in the power grid has become increasingly serious. Harmonic pollution poses a great threat to the power grid and reduces the reliability of the power system. Therefore, analyzing harmonics is of great significance. The article first briefly introduces the principle of Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD), and then attempts to optimize and improve the VMD method, proposing an improved VMD algorithm. For two different situations of steady-state power grid signals and intermittent power grid signals, VMD and the improved VMD algorithm are compared in the analysis and processing of harmonics between target signals, Both VMD methods can separate the harmonics and interharmonics contained in the target signal. By calculating several algorithm evaluation indicators, the results show that the improved VMD algorithm has better processing effect, higher calculation accuracy, and feasibility.
