Ernö Goldfinger (1902–1987) as an architect wrote and talked most about space as a determinant of his architecture. This article traces the sources of this preoccupation in his thinking, especially his contacts with Adolf Loos and Auguste Perret in Paris in the 1920s, and outlines its progressive emergence in his built and designed work from that period through his relocation to London in 1934 to its culmination in his major projects of the 1950s and 60s. His three Architectural Review articles on space in architecture and urbanism of 1941–1942 are discussed in relation to his later built work and participation in the French Groupe Espace, and its spin-off, the 'This is Tomorrow' exhibition of 1956 at the Whitechapel Gallery in London.
