This analysis explores elements of knowledge and narrative in Afonso Cruz’s work, highlighting themes like truth and fiction.
Conceived as a cultural compendium that emulates the encyclopaedic format, the Enciclopédia da Estória Universal (Quetzal Editores and Alfaguara), by the multifaceted writer and artist Afonso Cruz, is a project built under the game of dissolution of borders between the concepts of author/narrator, of the true/apocryphal and of history/fiction. It contains short-short stories, aphorisms, parables, micro-poems and other discursive short formats converted into formulas that provide new meanings and perspectives on knowledge and the cultural baggage built up by Man over the ages. It is our aim to offer an analysis of the formal and thematic strategies and techniques used by Afonso Cruz in reconstructing and revising human knowledge. These mechanisms are supported by a postmodern sensibility towards the crisis of the great narratives and the critical exploration of concepts such as truth, history or literature.
