Observational analysis of xylem sap composition in loblolly pine, indicating nutrient interactions influence amino acid levels.
The nutrient supply in a young stand of Pinus taeda L. was increased by the application of inorganic fertilizers and the effect upon xylem sap constitutuents was investigated. Nitrogen produced an increase in the total-N, "amino-N", and "amide-N" levels. Glutamine was the most abundant amino acid in all samples. The phosphorus level in the xylem sap was increased by phosphorus application but decreased by nitrogen. Examination of the NP and NK interactions indicated that the depressing effect of nitrogen occurred only when phosphorus or potassium was applied along with the nitrogen. Potassium application to the soil increased potassium levels in the sap.
