A new method solves torsion problems in prismatic bars with polygonal shapes, suggesting improved accuracy and efficiency.
An efficient method based on analytic base functions has been developed to solve the torsion problems of prismatic bars having convex polygonal cross sections. Polynomials and the Fourier cosine series are proposed as the base functions to solve the boundary value problems, and they are so selected to satisfy the exact governing diffrential equation. The present combination of the polynomials and the Fourier series, and the form of the polynomials have not used or suggested in the existing literature. The computational efficiency and accuracy in the evaluation of torsinal rigidities and maximun stresses are verified through numerical examples.
