Theoretical analysis reveals the relationship between pressure drop and flow rate in ER fluids, suggesting insights into their dynamic behavior.
In the present study, the unsteady flow of Electrorheological (ER) fluid between two parallel-plate electrodes is solved theoretically. The ER fluid is modeled as a continuum and constitutive equation for a Bingham fluid is used. Flow visualization is conducted for the stationary ER fluids and for a flow using a microscope and velocity distributions are obtained by measuring those of the clusters to compare with the calculated results. The theoretical results of the relationship between the pressure drop and the flow rate are shown for both a steady and a laminar pulsating flow and some of them are compared with the experimental results.
