Integrated assessment reveals critical thermal malfunctions in coal-fired power plants, indicating a need for better diagnosis systems.
The calculation of efficiency of a coal–fired utility boiler only provides overall figures regarding thermal performance. Even the heat loss method (ASME, 1964) skips over important thermal malfunctions of the boiler, such as draft unevenness, abnormal combustion behaviour, effect of different ash-fouling patterns, effect of boiler malfunctions in auxiliary systems and vice versa, etc. As a consequence, the ultimate causes of these malfunctions cannot be adequately addressed. An integrated diagnosis system for boiler and auxiliary equipments’ deviations is necessary to perform this task. This paper describes the general scope and, as a case study, some results obtained for the boiler of a 350 MWe coal–fired unit.
