This method examines thermodynamic efficiency in multi-step processes, indicating potential performance gains.
This paper presents a new approach for the exergy analysis of multi-step processes. It consists of a graphical presentation of the global process efficiency as a function of the local efficiencies and of the exergy load coefficients for each unit operation. The implementation of the method to monitor the stepwise improvement of a gas purification plant implying topological changes is demonstrated. This example illustrates the simplicity and reliability of the method to identify and quantify potential thermodynamic performance improvements over that of an existing or initial design even for complex processes.
