Qualitative analysis reveals standing wave behavior and mode shape changes in flexible disks, indicating potential impacts on magnetic recording.
The dynamics of a 3.5 inch flexible disk rotating between two stationary plates under the load of suspended Winchester heads are studied empirically. A novel device is developed to better visualize the disk motion and the formation of standing waves. The standing wave pattern is observed to be largely dependent on the size of the head access slot, disk rotational speed, and the location of the head load. It is further noticed that the flexible disk experiences a sudden change or snap from one mode shape to another as the location of the load changes. Under certain conditions, the disk is observed to undergo violent vibrations as it switches between two stable mode shapes. The implication of these wave phenomena on magnetic recording is also briefly discussed.
