Numerical analysis reveals differences in turbine losses with varying clocking positions in a multistage turbine, suggesting optimization possibilities.
The paper presents results of unsteady viscous flow calculations for a stator-rotor-stator turbine configuration with different clocking positions of the second stator row. The calculations were carried out on a IBM SP2 hardware architecture. A second-order upwind total-variation diminishing scheme is employed in combination with a second order implicit dual-time stepping and an explicit four stage Runge-Kutta time integration method. The in- and outflow boundaries are treated with non-reflecting boundary techniques. Turbulence is accounted for by using the Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model. The investigation is focused on the shape and the propagation of the wakes from the upstream stator blades and their influence on the turbine losses. A Fourier decomposition of the time periodic entropy field at different axial positions has been made and compared for two clocking positions. It has been found that the overall losses in the exit of the second stator differ for the investigated configuration.
