This investigation reveals mucus clearance mechanisms in pulmonary airways, suggesting key airflow interactions.
The interaction of mucus and serous layers with airflow plays an important role in flow resistance and mucus clearance in pulmonary airways. In this study, the critical conditions for the instability of mucus/air interface was investigated experimentally. The trachea was modeled as a rigid channel of rectangular cross-section with only the adjustable bottom lined with the mucus-serous layer simulants. Both positive and negative pressures were used to mimic the conditions occurring in the airways.
