Analysis reveals the relationship between bone mineral content and acoustic measurements, indicating potential for non-invasive diagnostics.
Bone strength in both the spine and the femur is directly related to the mineral content. X-ray bone densitometry has been used for the determination of bone loss in clinical diagnosis. Measurements of the change in the modulus of elasticity [1], the natural frequency of a bone [2] and ultrasonic tests [3] have been related to the mineral loss, thus to the strength of the bone. Measurement of material damping and modal damping, in particular, has been used here as a simple, non-invasive method for evaluation of mineral loss in bones [4,5].
