Abstract This paper addresses the urgent need to decarbonise the global freight sector. Using the ITF PASTA modelling framework, it projects freight activity and emissions to 2050 under two policy scenarios of differing climate ambitions. Results reveal that without significant efforts and higher ambitions, global freight transport will not meet climate goals. Regional analyses underscore the importance of international cooperation. The study also discusses challenges in achieving efficiency gains and modal shifts and emphasises the vital role of demand management in successful decarbonisation efforts.
