Abstract The purpose of this article is to describe the construction and validation of a competency model for training and selection. The study involved 920 racket sports officials from 29 provinces in China, who were surveyed through an online questionnaire. In Phase 1, the Behavioral Event Interview (BEI) technique was used to interview 23 top international racket sports officials. In total, 422 valid questionnaires were collected during the initial survey. A competency model was developed through investigation and exploratory factor analysis. In Phase 2, the competency model was tested using confirmatory factor analysis, and the results showed that 42 competencies were identified. The investigator grouped them into the following five categories: (1) learning and improvement, (2) professional ethics, (3) officiating abi lity, (4) professional knowledge, and (5) communication ability. The results of this study are expected to facilitate research on this topic and be useful for developing training and evaluation programs for racket sports officials.
