Octacyclic imidazophenanthridine derivatives have been synthesized by the intramolecular C–H arylation of phenanthroimidazolylbenzothiadiazoles. A significant increase in the molar extinction coefficient (ε) compared with their non-fused counterparts has been achieved, while retaining the high fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF). Their luminescence properties vary in various solvents, as well as in crystalline and mechanically ground states.
