New Zealand is primarily made of two islands with a total population of around 5 Million. The smaller North Island contains a higher population including New Zealand's largest city of Auckland with approximately 1.5 million residents, while the larger South Island contains a much smaller population and is largely rural. Lauder on the South Island is also the home of a NIWA measurement site designed to measure background trace gas concentrations of pollutants. MAX-DOAS measurements were performed at various locations in New Zealand both on the North Island and South Island. In particular, results from Auckland and Lauder will be highlighted. This presentation will compare and constrast results from the two islands with respect to measured trace gases including NO2, HCHO, and O4. Using the O4 measurements the approximate aerosol levels will be compared. Future and current work at DST also employs MAX-DOAS as an aid in tracking pollutant levels for both shipping vessels and aircraft. This presentation will describe the current systems along with goals for expanding the current monitoring network in the future.
