Abstract There is a serious health threat to humans, plants, and animals in developing countries due to water pollution. In order to achieve the best results, it is recommended that membranes be prepared with a long life, acceptable color removal efficiency, as well as anti-clogging properties. A polyethersulfone membrane solution was first prepared by adding montmerillonite clay nanoparticles (NPs) modified with chitosan to a polyethersulfone membrane solution at different weight percentages. An investigation was conducted into the effect of additive nanoparticles on mechanical properties, structural characteristics, and flux rejection and recovery of membranes. The water flux of this membrane is acceptable when compared to the polyethersulfone membrane due to its hydrophilicity, resistance, and Methylene Blue (MB) as cationic dye elimination (94%). The modified polyethersulfone membrane also performs better in terms of water flux recovery than the unmodified polyethersulfone membrane. This means that dye removal is enhanced by NPs.
