AbstractBackground Running-Related Injuries (RRI) can be due to a complex interaction of risk factors specific to each individual runner. So far runners have not seen the consistency of reduction of injuries that other sports have experienced through exercise-based or educational injury prevention programmes.Objective (1) to identify injury risk reduction practices provided for runners in the literature (2) explore and process all interventions, theoretical approaches and methods of delivery, from the perspective of all stake-holders involved in running injury prevention.Design Scoping review.Setting Electronic databases.Participants All runners, ages and levels of experience.Intervention Databases SPORTDiscus, MEDLINE and CINAHL were searched for all literature that had prevention of RRI as the main outcome or theme, and interventions for injury risk reduction. Main Outcome Measures Data was extracted from studies according to their study design. Entities extracted included demographic details and type of running, interventions and mode of delivery, study outcomes, compliance, intervention outcomes, synthesized themes from qualitative studies, and descriptive details from reviews, surveys and opinion papers.Results A total of 2388 studies were identified after duplicates removed, with 99 selected for final analysis. Predominantly runners were novice or recreational with minimal studies involving elite runners. Intervention approaches tended to address single risk factors. Methods of delivery for exercise interventions were mainly unsupervised, and studies on advice and education mainly implemented information through web-based applications which were poorly accessed or utilized. Runners reported increased satisfaction from more individualized approaches, better understanding of aetiology and when behavioural changes were incorporated.Conclusions Future runner-centred intervention studies should focus on ensuring runners are equipped with all tools needed to reduce RRI; provide understanding, and avoid single intervention approaches. Some element of supervision appears important for adherence, but if using online software or wearable technology, personal profiling may help promote behavioural change.
