AbstractBackground Injuries present an important health problem in hip hop dance and there are a lack of studies investigating preventive measures in that sport. Objective we hypothesized that significantly less injuries would occur in the experimental group compared to the control group during the 15-week intervention and 6-month follow-up.Design A prospective, randomised, controlled trial where the accessors and participants were blind. The randomisation was done by a third person, not otherwise involved in the study. The dance teams/clubs were allocated either to the experimental or control group.Setting The study was conducted in Slovenia. Pre- and post-intervention assessment was conducted in the laboratory of the Faculty of Sports in Ljubljana. Injury screening was held via on-line OSTRC questionnaire. The intervention was held in the dance studios of experimental group.Participants All 44 Slovenian hip hop teams/clubs were invited to participate. 10 willing teams/clubs were chosen randomly. The entry criteria was; at least 3 years of participation in international competitions, older than 14 years of age, active registration status at the Slovenian Dance Association, healthy and non-injured. 161 participants (all World, European and/or national champions) entered the study and 123 of them finished the final evaluation.Intervention For 15 weeks (twice a week), the experimental group included in their training routine warm-up, the specifically designed, structured prevention programme (9 exercises, 5 stages). The control group continued with their usual training routine.Main Outcome Measurements The injury occurrence during the intervention and 6 months afterwards. Results The cumulative injury incidence in the experimental group slightly decreased during the 15-weeks intervention (significantly increased in the control group), and then slightly increased in the 6-month follow-up (significantly increased in the control group). Conclusion The specifically designed, structured prevention programme can lead to lower injury occurrence in hip hop dance.View this table:View inline View popup Download powerpoint Abstract 624 Table 1 Cumulative injury incidence statistical analysis values.
