Breast cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in women and can also affect men. Specifically, the MCF7 line of breast cancer contains estrogen, progesterone, and glucocorticoid receptors and is widely used for studying and researching breast cancer. Menadione is a synthetic form of Vitamin K that is used to treat active breast cancer. Vitamin D(VD3) is a hormone that is made in the body in response to sunlight. Previous results have shown that women with VD3 deficiency are at higher risk of developing breast cancer. Using cell culture, the MCF7 breast cancer cells are grown and treated with different amounts of Menadione, Vitamin D, and then a combinations of Menadione and Vitamin D. Cell viability is measured using the MTT assay. When treating the MCF7 with Vitamin D the vitamin may act as a protecting agent for the cancer cells, while the results of the Menadione suggest it is able to decrease the number of cells. The hope is to find that the Vitamin D can work with the Menadione to help reduce breast cancer in the body. None.
