The methods used to place individuals into treatment groups vary significantly, and the most effective group composition for the adult sex offender population has yet to be determined. This archival study analyzed group completion status based on group therapy composition to determine if homogeneous or heterogeneous groups led to improved retention, which has been demonstrated to reduce recidivism. Included in this archival study were 148 individuals referred to treatment as usual in a community-based program in the Midwest. Heterogeneous groups on underlying psychological issues contributing to sexual crime may be a preferable option for adult clients in sex offender treatment.
