The article analyzes the works of the Russian writer N.S. Leskov, which reflects the Russian legal reality. In sharply satirical tones, the author draws a corrupt pre-reform court (“Waster”), images of embezzling government officials — the police chief and the quarterly (“Robbery”), images of nihilist criminals (“On knives”) and gives an example of true service to the Fatherland in the person of the quarterly Ryzhov (“Odnodum”).
