Clinical observation demonstrates severe lung hepatization progressing to lung abscess in a patient, indicating invasive bacterial complications.
A 50-year-old man with a cough and breathing difficulties had liver-like enhancement on left lung echocardiography, indicative of lung hepatization (Picture A, B).Chest radiography revealed extensive consolidation and multiple infiltrating shadows (Picture C).Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed consolidation in the left lower lobe without air bub-bles or air bronchogram and multiple nodules in the right lung (Picture D).A urinary antigen test for Streptococcus pneumoniae was positive, and sputum and blood cultures revealed S. pneumoniae.Based on these results, the patient was diagnosed with invasive pneumococcal disease.
