Indoor plants provide many benefits but maintaining a healthy indoor plant can be difficult for some people as they may forget to water the plant regularly. In this research, we present design of an initial prototype smart flowerpot as an Internet of Things (IoT) device for automatic plant care. The device retrieves weather forecast data over the Internet and can record sensor readings. Three control modes: manual, automated, and smart care with machine learning, were tested. Preliminary results show that plants were kept alive in all modes, but the smart care mode achieved the same outcomes with much less water usage. In all modes, maintaining steady soil moisture level proved to be challenging.
