An Analysis of the Use of Health Information Systems in Public Healthcare in Sri Lanka Using the Technology Acceptance Model

Health Information Systems (HIS) have the potential to improve the productivity and efficiency of healthcare staff. However, the adoption of HIS has been lower in Sri Lanka compared to developed countries. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing the adoption of HIS among public healthcare staff in Sri Lanka using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). A survey was conducted among 100 doctors and nurses and the data was analyzed using the Partial Least Squares Structured Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) with bootstrapping of 5000 subsamples. The results show that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude and behavioral intention have significant positive relationships. However, perceived ease of use did not have a significant positive relationship with attitude. These findings suggest that the TAM provides a useful framework for understanding the adoption of HIS in Sri Lanka. This study provides insights into the adoption of technology for healthcare stakeholders in Sri Lanka and allows practitioners to identify the factors that need to be considered when successfully deploying HIS.
