Background: The treatment of asymptomatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in clinical practice has not yet reached a consensus. We report here a successful case of asymptomatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment treated with a single retinal laser directly acting around the retinal hole. Case presentation: An 18-year-old Chinese male was diagnosed with asymptomatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD). Physical examination revealed a small atrophic hole in the upper temporal periphery of the left retina. Shallow retinal detachment can be seen at the around 2-5 o'clock region near the hole but not in the macular area.Unlike traditional demarcation laser photocoagulation(DLP), we chose to directly focus laser light on the edge of the retinal hole. After a single laser treatment, the patient's retinal hole is closed and the retina was gradually reattached. Conclusions: We report a novel treatment method for asymptomatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. In similar cases of this RRD, laser sealing of retinal tear is shown to be effective and necessary to determine its indications.
