As the industry moves towards well construction for underground storage projects, there could be uncertainties on the requirements for long term zonal isolation. The scope of a storage project should help with the well construction FEED though the applicability of utilizing fit-for-purpose cement design could be overlooked as well as overdesigned based upon the notion of "corrosion risks" for well integrity. The cementing design approach should look holistically at the corrosive risks and isolation requirements as opposed to a single solution approach or wort case design independent of the well utility. The manuscript discusses the approach to designing fit-for-purpose cement designs to achieve long term zonal isolation for a future CCUS project.
