Observational analysis reveals dye ascends in a clockwise spiral in southern pines, suggesting unique movement patterns.
The pattern of upward dye movement was determined by injecting acid fuchsin dye into five species of pines: shortleaf, slash, longleaf, loblolly, and Virginia. The dye ascended in a spiral pattern, turning clockwise around the axis of the tree. In the branches, however, the dye did not follow a spiral pattern but moved parallel to the branch axis.
