Controlled-pollination trials showed white kraft bags outperform other options, suggesting improvements for fruit set.
In controlled-pollination trials of green ash, manufactured white kraft pollination bags were superior to sausage-casing bags and brown kraft paper bags, both in pollen isolation capabilities and in fruit-to-flower ratio. Only the white kraft bags yielded fruit set proportions similar to those from wind pollination. No significant pollination was observed prior to bud-scale separation, allowing for discrimination of flower buds before bagging. Flowers continued to be receptive to pollination until they withered completely. Maximum flower receptivity occurred during the period of pistil extension, but it is suggested that pollinations be carried out as soon as reproductive buds can be identified. Forest Sci. 31:82-88.
