Artificial intelligence is a growing resource and tool in the medical field. In gastroenterology, its use within colonoscopy, the gold-standard diagnostic test for the lower gastrointestinal tract, shows significant promise. In recent years, a variety of studies, including clinical trials, observational studies, and systematic reviews, have been published, highlighting its potential and the significant impact it can provide. These include supporting the detection of colorectal polyps, real-time optical diagnosis, and automated measurement of existing and novel key performance indicators of colonoscopy. More recently, its application has also evolved into the realm of inflammatory bowel disease and therapeutic colonoscopy. In this review, we summarise the latest updates in the field, its current benefits, and further work required to accelerate its translation in day-to-day clinical practice.
