This analysis evaluates performance differences among VMware Workstation versions 15.5.7, 16.1.1, and 17.0.0, highlighting the role of benchmarking.
This paper focuses on comparing the performance of different versions of the VMware Workstation Type-2 hypervisor, specifically versions 15.5.7, 16.1.1, and 17.0.0. The performance of these hypervisor versions was evaluated based on results obtained through two approaches: performance testing of different file systems, and three standard analyses summarizing essential system information. The testing procedure for all hypervisors was conducted under identical conditions. The Filebench benchmarking tool was used, ensuring consistency and independence from hardware or system-specific influences. Ubuntu 22.04.3, a Linux distribution, was selected as the guest operating system. One virtual machine was created on each VMware Workstation version, with Ubuntu 22.04.3 installed as the guest OS. Performance measurements were conducted independently on each virtual machine using the Filebench tool.
