Abstract

The sol-gel technique is a strong and chemically adaptable synthesis route for producing sophisticated inorganic, organic-inorganic hybrid, and composite materials. The sol-gel process uses hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions of metal alkoxide or salt precursors to generate nanostructured materials with controlled porosity, shape, and surface functionality. This bottom-up technique enables the synthesis of a wide range of material shapes, including thin films, aerogels, xerogels, fibers, coatings, and monolithic structures, under relatively mild circumstances. The incorporation of templating techniques and hybridization schemes has increased the adaptability of sol-gel produced materials, improving their mechanical and functional qualities. Applications include a wide range of fields, such as optical and electronic devices, energy storage systems, environmental remediation (e.g., removal of heavy metals and BPA), gas separation membranes, and biomedical applications for drug delivery and tissue engineering. The sol-gel process's intrinsic capacity to tune structural, chemical, and mechanical properties at the molecular level makes it a key component in the design and creation of next-generation functional materials. Sol-gel-based materials' mild synthesis conditions and adjustable nanostructures help them overcome important constraints in the biomedical and energy storage domains. Sol-gel-derived oxides such as TiO₂ and RuO₂ provide high surface area, enhanced cyclic stability, and improved ion diffusion in batteries and supercapacitors, achieving capacitances exceeding 700 F/g and capacities up to 190 mAh/g. In biomedical applications, sol-gel bioactive glasses promote rapid bone regeneration due to their high porosity and reactivity, while sol-gel silica nanoparticles enable controlled drug delivery with high loading efficiency. Sol-gel synthesis, in contrast to conventional techniques, permits the incorporation of delicate biomolecules without causing thermal degradation. Sol-gel is a potent platform for next-generation functional materials because of its adaptability.
