This analysis identifies echimyidae species in Paraguay and highlights conservation inadequacies for certain species.
Six species of spiny rat (Echimyidae) have been documented to occur in Paraguay belonging to two subfamilies: Echimyinae (4 species in 4 genera) and Euryzgomatomyinae (2 species in 2 genera). No species have been the subject of specific field studies in Paraguay. Only one species is widespread through the country: Myocastor coypus. Two species show ecoregion associations: Clyomys laticeps (Cerrado) and Kannabateomys amblyonyx (Atlantic Forest). For several species the current national IUCN threat classification is considered to inadequately reflect threat levels.
