Analysis employs DPSIR framework to evaluate solid waste management in the footwear sector, suggesting improved resource recovery.
The footwear sector has experienced fast growth and remarkable expansion over the past three decades in Vietnam. This rapid growth has brought substantial contributions to the national socio-economic development. However, in parallel with this positive perspective, the footwear industry has also posed challenges in controlling and minimizing waste flow. Worldwide, the circular economy (CE) has recently been considered as an inevitable trend of resources utilization in which solid waste generated by industries had drawn much attention from academies and industrial managers. The purpose of this study is to employ Input Output Models (I-O), and the DPSIR framework to comprehensively assess the sustainable value of circular economy strategies in solid waste management (SWM) within footwear industry in Vietnam. In addition, through the deployment of CE concept, economic, environmental, and social impacts of solid waste flows were examined. The analysis of data collected in 2023 reveals that most solid wastes, mainly leather and rubber scraps, are currently handled by incineration or landfilling, with low recycling rates. This suggests that a CE strategy in the footwear sector should be promoted to improve resource recovery and reuse rates, that enable to reduce the reliance on natural resources, and lower carbon emissions. The DPSIR framework further explains the complex relationships between market forces (The driving force of shoe production), environmental pressures (The pressure of waste generation), environmental state (The considerations of legislation and regulation), environmental impacts (The adverse effects), and policy responses (The management measures). In order to adopt circular economy strategy, it could not only reduce waste treatment costs for companies but also enhances their corporation.
