Abstract

Purpose: We present a case of full-thickness upper eyelid and upper canalicular reconstruction following a dog bite that caused a full-thickness eyelid defect with associated punctal and canalicular injury.Case summary: A 46-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with a full-thickness defect of the left upper eyelid caused by a dog bite. The injury involved the proximal upper canaliculus and punctum. The patient brought excised tissue containing full-thickness skin, eyelashes, and conjunctiva. Reconstruction of the upper eyelid and upper canaliculus was performed under general anesthesia. At the 3-week follow-up, the patient exhibited eyelash loss and necrotic crusting on the left upper eyelid. At the 2-month follow-up, the necrotic crust had improved. After 5 months, the nasolacrimal silicone tube was removed. Although the patient reported no tearing, mild ptosis, lagophthalmos, and eyelash loss persisted.Conclusions: Full-thickness upper eyelid and upper canalicular reconstruction was successfully performed in this case of a dog bite-induced defect. However, mild ptosis, lagophthalmos, and eyelash loss persisted.
