Experiment shows educational briefing enhances perceived learning and attitudinal impact in foster parenting, suggesting conditioning factors for effectiveness.
Entertainment portrayals of fostering offer a source of learning for current and prospective foster parents. Given their entertainment education capability, under what conditions might they be most effective? This experiment with a general adult sample (N = 502) tests the effectiveness of an educational briefing prior to a fostering portrayal on perceived learning, perceived attitudinal impact, and behavioral intent to foster. Educational briefing had a positive direct effect on perceived learning. Perceived realism, emotional engagement, narrative presence, and perceived persuasive intent positively predicted viewer outcomes. Findings clarify boundary conditions of the entertainment education framework. Suggestions are offered for fostering practitioners.
