This paper demonstrates that spherical concrete sliding hinges improve flexibility in isostatic tunnels, indicating potential for enhanced design.
This paper presents a novel design for spherical concrete sliding hinges applied in the isostatic Double Decked Cut & Cover Tunnel of the Oosterweel Link. The sliding hinge concept offers rotational flexibility while effectively transferring high normal forces and accommodating differential settlements. Detailed experimental tests, combined with finite element analyses, assess the performance of two interface materials—bituminous (Eshastick) and PTFE-stainless steel. Results demonstrate significant differences in frictional behavior and crack propagation, leading to recommendations for interface selection and hinge orientation in tunnel design.
