This analysis reveals that proposed equations accurately estimate distortional buckling loads in cold-formed steel channels, indicating effective design practices.
In this paper, the evaluation method for the elastic distortional buckling load was investigated. The theoretical equations about the model that consist of the flange and the lip were derived, both in the case of that the longitudinal edge of the flange is simply supported or fixed. By comparing the elastic buckling loads obtained from eigenvalue analyses with those predicted by the proposed design equations, it was found that the proposed equations provide a good estimation for the distortional buckling load of the flange-lip model. Furthermore, we conducted eigenvalue analyses of axially compressed lipped channel members. Through numerical investigations, it was found that the proposed equations can also be used to evaluate the distortional buckling load of lipped channels by considering the restraining effect between flange and web.
