This research demonstrates improved resilience and performance of torrent barriers against natural hazards, highlighting advanced modelling techniques.
Heavy precipitation, high water levels and increased debris flows have critically impacted the resilience of the Austrian infrastructure. Building on previous research into the Pinnisbach torrent barrier failure under extreme events, this study employs advanced non-linear modelling to boost and refine the understanding of barrier failure mechanisms and evaluate the original design's load assumptions. Additionally, the research focuses on employing advanced non-linear modelling to assess if the new load approaches and materials, aligned with current standards, might improve the performance and resilience of the barrier under similar hazard scenarios. The findings may assist in the future barrier planning and design, providing recommendations to increase resilience and reduce vulnerability to extreme events. Further results might address inadequacies in past design implementation and integrate climate-adaptive measures into future standards to improve the safety and stability of torrent barriers and other similar infrastructures.
