This article reveals new sightings of the deep-sea red crab in the Gulf of Mexico, suggesting possible range changes.
The deep-sea red crab ( Chaceon quinquedens (Smith, 1879)) is a marine decapod endemic to the western Atlantic Ocean. The species is documented occurring along the edge of the continental shelf and slope from the Scotian Shelf to the Gulf of Mexico. In this article, we present observations of deep-sea red crabs on the Grand Banks, Canada, several hundred kilometers outside of their previously described range. These observations do not allow us to comment on whether the deep-sea red crab has expanded its range; however, they do contribute to an improved understanding of this deep-dwelling marine crab’s natural history.
