Multiple transcription factors and chromatin-modifying enzymes are known to regulate cortical neurogenesis and neuronal migration in the mammalian cerebral cortex. In their work, Manuel Baizabal and colleagues show that PR domain-containing 16 (PRDM16), a chromatin regulator, forms a complex with C-terminal binding proteins 1 and 2 (CtBP1/2) to control enhancers in cortical neural stem cells by interacting with histone deacetylase 1 and 2 (HDAC1/2) and lysine-specific demethylase (LSD). To learn about their work, we spoke to the first authors, Sophie Warren and Bader El Farran, and the corresponding author, Manuel Baizabal, Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, Indiana University, USA.
