Research reveals reclassification of Lindbergia gittenbergeri under Vitrea based on reproductive system anatomy, suggesting implications for taxonomy.
The species Lindbergia gittenbergeri was assigned to the genus Lindbergia based solely on shell characteristics. The first examination of its reproductive system now confirms unequivocally that the species belongs to the genus Vitrea. Since this is the second species of Lindbergia reclassified under the genus Vitrea – following V. garganoensis – we regard L.? karainensis, L. parnonensis and L. pageti whose anatomy of the reproductive system remains unknown, as requiring confirmation. Consequently, based on the verified species of the genus, Lindbergia appears to be endemic to the Aegean.
