Qualitative analysis reveals that aligning circular economy with Islamic economics promotes sustainability, suggesting new inclusive practices.
Purpose This study aims to explore the intersection between the concept of circular economy (CE) and Islamic economics, emphasizing that Islamic economic values recognize and support key aspects of CE and how this integration can create a more sustainable economic model. Design/methodology/approach This research uses qualitative content analysis to identify key characteristics in the literature on CE and Islamic economics. Findings The study’s findings suggest that, ontologically, both CE and Islamic economics promote a holistic approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of economic actors and nature. Epistemologically, both encourage the use of knowledge and innovation to create sustainable, ethically grounded solutions. Axiologically, both systems emphasize social justice, inclusivity and ethical responsibility to maintain the balance of nature and communal well-being. Research limitations/implications Integrating CE principles with Islamic economic values can foster more sustainable and inclusive economic practices. Strategies such as remanufacturing, reuse and recycling can be applied across industries, supported by Islamic principles of stewardship and trust. Public policies promoting renewable energy use and efficient waste management can also be reinforced through this approach. Originality/value Discussions on the relationship between CE and Islamic economics are still rare and require extensive exploration. This study offers an integrative framework combining principles from both approaches, making a significant contribution to the academic literature by providing a new, holistic and sustainable perspective.
