Analysis shows population growth of Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys in Baihe National Nature Reserve, indicating a need for enhanced conservation measures.
This investigation focused on the population of Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) in the Xiapingdi region of Baihe National Nature Reserve, Sichuan. Data on the population size and distribution of the Xiapingdi monkeys were collected and organized through fixed transect surveys, with results compared to historical records. The findings indicate that the population of the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey golden snub-nosed monkey group in the Xiapingdi area has increased to 360–410 individuals, up from a previous estimate of 330–400 individuals. Additionally, the lower altitude limit of their habitat has shifted from 2000 meters to 1800 meters. The diet of the group has expanded to include Polygonum cuspidatum, walnut leaves or buds, and Schisandra chinensis. Nevertheless, the survival of the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey population in the Xiapingdi area continues to be adversely affected by various anthropogenic factors, such as hunting and grazing. To ensure the long-term survival of this endangered species, it is imperative for the reserve to maintain monitoring efforts and enhance its conservation strategies. This study provides scientific support for evaluating the effectiveness of reserve development and for formulating conservation plans for the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey.
