This approach demonstrates homogeneously catalyzed conversion of furfural to gamma-valerolactone, suggesting efficient acid recycling.
This study discloses the first system that produces gamma-valerolactone (GVL) directly from the carbohydrate-derived biogenic furfural aldehyde (FA) in quantitative yields. Additionally, we describe he first example of the homogeneously catalyzed hydrogenative valorization of FA employing co-catalytic and recyclable acid additive. Ten cycles of reusing the same 5 mol% Amberlyst-36 is demonstrated for the transformation, employing fresh 0.5 mol% Ru-MACHO-BH in each cycle.
